It was just a dream, but that didn’t make it any less disturbing. Neither did the repetition of it night after night.

He was in his bed at the barracks of the academy. His father was there too, but otherwise the large room was empty. The sound of boots clicking across the floor to Conrad’s bed echoed loudly in his ears. His heart would beat faster with each step until an even louder silence engulfed them.

Dan Hiri had been dead for years, but the dream didn’t seem to care. There he was—young and full of life—the way Conrad still remembered him. He always seemed like he could take on any obstacle with a laugh and a gleam in his eye.

For two parents who always seemed very easy going on the surface they had certainly produced a very serious child.

His father would smile knowingly at him as if he had figured something out about his son, but wasn’t about to spoil the surprise. The half human would open his mouth to speak, but the older human would silence him with his own mouth.

He tasted of whiskey and smoke and his hands felt rough as they slowly spread his legs apart.

Each morning, Conrad would wake up in a cold sweat to the stares of full-bloodied Mazoku.

At least they had a real reason to stare for once.

Definitely a pairing I normally don't read. I love how you wrote a short piece, but you chose the perfect words to really emphasize it well.

Well, it would be hard to normally read it. I don't think I've ever seen it before. ^^ Well, I knew someone who started to write it, but I don't think it was ever finished and posted. But aaaanyway, thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

I may be dense, but the last line left me puzzled. "At least they had a real reason to stare for once." -- Why would they stare? It was a dream - right? Just being in a sweat wouldnt make them stare - would it? I feel that I am missing something - perhaps something simple, that when you clarify it , I will be slapping my head.

The thought behind that line was that back then Conrad had quite the chip on his shoulder about being a half-breed. He seemed to be grooming himself to be a martyr. It seemed like he stayed aloof from his fellow students and when he did interact with them he was kicking their asses at swordplay.

So, it isn't necessarily that they are staring (though some probably are because he is the Maou's son and a half breed and for the way he behaves) but that he FEELS like they are always staring.

He was also likely to have been making other sounds in his sleep.

Did that make any more sense?

OK - I think that makes sense. His dream was so intense that he feels everyone knows what he was dreaming. Now I dont feel the need to hit my head. We've all had dreams that stayed with us after awakening. Some linger more than others and feel real.
