There were two horizons.

In the west, the disappearing sun displayed its last rays upon the darkening sky in layers of red and orange. In the east, there was a beautiful crimson cast upon a smoky backdrop.

It would have been a beautiful night if the lone figure could have ignored the context of fields and homes burning to a cinder. But he could no more ignore the context of this night's sky than he could ignore the signs of war wearing on the people of Shin Makoku and the human lands.

It was his job to analyze the war so he could best advise his king, his commander, his… Well, the more personal nature of their relationship was less clear. And in a time so murky, the great sage clung to any glimpses of clarity he could find.

It was almost comical to think back on his life of only a few short months ago. He had been a solitary man, nothing much had changed for him in that regard. He spent his days reading, writing, and studying both in and out of books. He'd been in nature, though rarely a part of it.

He was rarely part of anything, ostracized for both his unorthodox coloring and his uncanny abilities to digest, retain, and synthesis information. Still, he was seldom lonely. He wanted for no more than he had and had no more than he wanted. His life was simple, and that was how he wanted it.

And then that infuriating, blond with his questionable sense of personal style and grand visions came riding into his life, complicating it beyond all recognition.

Suddenly, the solitary man with his long, black hair and piercing, black eyes was part of something. He was the primary advisor in a massive war effort to determine, quite possibly, the fate of all things. He was most often surrounded by people even if he still tended to remain silent, watching rather than getting involved.

"It's late," came a voice from behind him, accompanied by a strong arm that wrapped around his waist. "Come to bed, my advisor. All that thinking can't be good for your mind."

The great sage could feel the hot breath against his neck and he closed his eyes when it was joined by the moist touch of lips. "Someone has to do it."

"Not tonight." The Shinou broke the embrace and retreated into the tent, confident he would be followed.

The solitary man turned as well, abandoning the duel horizons for something even he could not completely understand.
